Alt-J Records Live Set from TCR for KEXP

Cambridgeshire-based basement-born experimental folk quartet Alt-J stopped by The Cutting Room Studios last week to record a live set for broadcast over KEXP radio. Think Radiohead gone acoustic, with a trip-hop flare, the crew played four tracks off their debut album An Awesome Wave, including KEXP Song of the Day Fitzpleasure. Released in the UK in May of this year via Infectious Music, the album is set to drop state-side with Canvasback Music this fall so be sure to look out for the enigmatic ‘folk-step’ LP when it hits shelves September 18. In the meantime, check out some photos from the live sessions below!

Live Set with Ms Mr for KEXP Radio (8/9)

Although a crotch shot snapped at the end of a long night might be endearing, there’s just nothing sexier than a little mystery. Throw on some soulful female vocals to a shadowy persona, with a dash of trip-hop and some retro-pop flare, and it’s no wonder that we’re smitten with Ms Mr – a secretive boy/girl chill wave pop duo that might just be the sexiest sound to come out of Brooklyn this year.

The pair, Ms (vocals) and Mr (instrumentals), began their project in New York City in early 2011 – writing demos in Brooklyn and establishing a (cryptic) identity in the ever influential blogosphere. Ms Mr released their debut EP Ghost City USA in June of last year. With sounds likened to those of Florence and the Machine and Zola Jesus, the nearly-anonymous duo quickly spurred international interest in their industrial brand of nostalgic chill wave. And that interest remains – their latest single Hurricane, released in May of this year with ChessClub Records (UK) and iamsound, claimed the number one spot on Hype-Machine with over 5.2K hits.

Ms Mr will be at The Cutting Room tomorrow (8/9) to record a live set for KEXP radio! Don’t miss it – tune into 90.3FM or stream the session from kexp.org tomorrow at 12N EST to listen.

Click here for tickets to see Ms Mr perform with Marina and Diamonds on August 16 at Webster Hall in NYC!

Alt-J to Record LIVE from TCR (8/7)

Of all the things that go on in basements, very few come to mind as being particularly positive. Landing a spot on this short list is Alt-J (or ∆ if you’re feeling literal) – the basement-brewed “folk-step” foursome based out of Cambridgeshire, UK.

The crew, composed of Joe Newman (guitar, vocals), Gwil Sainsbury (bass), Thom Green (drums) and Gus Unger-Hamilton (keys, backing vocals) met while studying at Leeds University in 2007. Like all good things, the project started in a dorm room – inspired by “his guitar-playing dad and hallucinogens,” Joe played while Gwil produced the tracks on Garageband. Captivated by the raw poignancy of the sound, Gus and Thom joined on to complete the band. Formerly known as both ‘Daljit Dhaliwal’ and then ‘Films,’ Alt-J released their debut album An Awesome Wave in May of this year with Infectious Music. Compared to a non-electronic Radiohead, or John Peel post 1978, Alt-J boasts an idiosyncratic perspective on folk rock. Subtle and syncopated, and loaded with more literary devices than a Robert Frost poem, the albums takes “an approach to rhythm and arrangement that suggests an old worlde take on dusted, trip-hop.” (The Guardian)

Alt-J will be at The Cutting Room Studios tomorrow (8/7) to record a live set for broadcast over KEXP radio. Don’t forget to tune in to 90.3FM at 12N EST, or to stream the live session from kexp.org!

Can’t wait? Catch Alt-J with ILLUMNTR at Mercury Lounge in NYC tonight (8/6)!

National Geographic Records for Upcoming Series

National Geographic returned to The Cutting Room Studios today to track vocals for their upcoming series, Brain Games. Scheduled to air this October, the three part mini-series examines the neurological basis of memory, sensory perception, and attention, and the way in which these elements interact to weave together the illusion of reality. You can read more about the show (and play some interactive brain games) here!

Ritmo Machine with DJ Chilly for KEXP Radio (7/12)

In New York City for the 2012 Latin Alternative Music Conference, Chilean hip hop pioneers Ritmo Machine will be stopping in at The Cutting Room tomorrow (7/12) to record tracks and interviews with DJ Chilly for broadcast on KEXP radio. A collaborative project between Eric Bobo and Latin Bitman, Ritmo Machine has created what LA Times called “its own new strain of soul music,” weaving together elements of afrobeat and cumbia with those of hip hop, jazz, funk and electronica.

Given the dynamic musical range achieved in the collaboration of Bobo and Bitman, the progressive blend that results should come as no surprise. Eric Bobo spent the early 90’s touring with the Beastie Boys, before joining Cypress Hill after meeting at Woodstock in 1994. A career percussionist, Bobo has recorded and performed with artists such as Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, and Ella Fitzgerald, among many others.

Before releasing his debut self-titled album in 2008, DJ Latin Bitman represented Chile as an Olympic surfer. The blend of beach-inspired influences with that of hip hop and funk from nearby Santiago quickly caught the attention of listeners worldwide, landing tracks from his second album (released 2010) a spot on the FIFA soundtrack, as well as TV shows including Dexter and 90210. Bobo and Bitman hooked up at Lollapalooza, where Bobo was performing with Cypress Hill, and the Ritmo Machine was born. The duo recently released their debut album Welcome to Ritmo Machine with Nacional Records. The album, recorded in Argentina and dedicated to the 2012 Chilean student rebellion, boasts tracks featuring Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5), Ana Tijoux, P-Nut (of 311), Sen Dog (of Cypress Hill), Sick Jacket (of Psycho Realm) and Money Mark & Mix Master Mike (of the Beastie Boys). You can check it out here.

Be sure to check out Ritmo Machine perform live (and for free) this Friday at the Bandshell in Prospect Park at 6pm! Don’t forget to check back for more updates on tomorrow’s session!

Ana Tijoux to Record with DJ Chilly for KEXP Radio (7/11)

Somewhere in between accepting chronic urban black foot from trekking down Broadway in sandals everyday and secretly enjoying the momentary relief of being dripped on by window air conditioners, we start to forget why it is we stick around in New York City for the summer. And then the Latin Alternative Music Conference comes to town, and we remember. Bringing you the freshest sounds from below the border for the past 13 years, LAMC has lined up seven acts to play in New York this year, from July 11 to July 14.

Before kicking off her showcase at SOB’s in Manhattan’s West Village on Thursday, French-Chilean hip hop dynamo Ana Tijoux is stopping by The Cutting Room tomorrow (7/11) to record tunes and interviews for KEXP with radio DJ Chilly. Former MC of Chilean hip hop group Makiza, Tijoux released her debut solo album Koas in 2007 with independent label Oveja Negra, scoring her nominations for Best New Artist and Best Urban Artist at the 2007 Premios MTV Latinoamérica (the Latin American version of the MTV Video Music Awards). After the 2009 Latin American release of her second album, 1977  (named for the year she was born), Nacional Records released the LP in the US in 2010 (you may have heard its first single (also named 1977) on the 2011 FIFA soundtrack, or featured in AMC television series Breaking Bad). In conjunction with Nacional Records,Tijoux released her US album in January of this year entitled La Bala – which you can check out here. Don’t miss this – think orchestral strings and horns backed with rumbling bass and accented with reggaeton gunshots, on which Tijoux lays down some serious Spanish flow.

Don’t forget to check out Ana Tijoux live at SOB’s on July 12 at 6:30pm or her (free) performance at the Bandshell in Prospect Park on July 13 at 6pm. Be sure to check back for updates on tomorrow’s session!

Animal Collective to Record In-Studio Sessions with KEXP, WXPN and KCRW radio!

Born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised on the streets right outside of our studio in downtown Manhattan, Animal Collective has been marching to the beat of their own, um, synthesizer long before the release of their debut album Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished in 2000. The once horror movie-inspired high school cover band has brought psychedelic ambient pop into the 21st century, and boy does the 21st century dig it. Their seventh album Strawberry Jam (2007), recorded intentionally in a desert environment, hit #72 on US Billboards Their 2009 album Merriweather Post Pavillion ranked #13 on the US Billboard, and was named Album of the Year by Pitchfork Media. The crew – composed of members Avery Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb) and Geologist (Brian Weitz) – is gearing up to release their 10th album Centipede Hz with Domino Records in September of this year, before kicking off their nearly three month international tour across Canada, Europe and the US. But first? Stopping by the studio tomorrow (6/29) for an in studio recording session for broadcast over KEXP, WXPN and KCRW radio.

The self-titled album boasts a rebellious rock-and-roll attitude – relentless punk rock instrumentation under raw vocal melodies. Check it out here.

Fletcher C. Johnson In-Studio Session with KEXP

The boys of Fletcher C. Johnson were in the studio yesterday, continuing the marathon of live in-studio recording sessions we’ve been hosting in partnership with KEXP radio this week. The trio, named for their vocalist (who, we found out yesterday, happens to be Matt Johnson’s brother of Matt & Kim, who also recorded live from The Cutting Room for KEXP), brought a super chill energy to the studio and had everyone laughing between songs. We were lucky to have host of KEXP’s The Morning Show, John Richards, broadcast the show from a studio control room inside the studio. In-house photographer, Lauren Slusher, grabbed some great pictures of the session for you to check out below. You can catch a recording of the live session at kexp.org or through iTunes, under Eclectic. Don’t forget to check out the latest EP from Fletcher C. Johnson Messing Up My Mind here!

Dirty Projectors Record Live In-Studio Session for KEXP (6/21)

With works likened to those of artists ranging from Beethoven to Led Zeppelin, Brooklyn-based American rock band Dirty Projectors has peaked the interest of fans and musicians alike. The hype is not undeserved – with six full-length albums released since their debut in 2003, Dirty Projectors has combined complex classical orchestration and technique with everything from punk to classic rock to West African influences to produce a sound unriveled. Over the past near-decade, the band – sculpted by former Yale student, Dave Longstreth – has put out albums conceptually reminiscent of Don Henley (The Getty Address 2005), reinterpreted from memory of Black Flag’s album Damaged (Rise Above 2007), and in conjunction with 12-time Grammy nominee Bjork (Mount Wittenberg Orce 2010). Check out this 2009 interview with Dave Longstreth, discussing his musical influences, and why he doesn’t like Frank Zappa.

Dirty Projectors are set to release their seventh full-length album Swing Lo Magellan on July 10 with Domino Records. The album, featuring 12 tracks (selected from about 40 finished demos written), promises to be intimate – warm and imperfect, accidental and spontaneous. The crew already released a music video for the first single off the new album, entitled Gun Has No Trigger, which you can watch here.

Before heading out for an almost 4-month tour, playing gigs nearly every night across the US, Canada, Japan and the UK, Dirty Projectors will in the studio recording a live in-studio session on KEXP radio this Thursday, June 21 at 12N EST. Be sure to tune into 90.3FM, or stream the session at kexp.org or through iTunes, under eclectic. Remember to check back here for photos of the recording session, and more updates from the studio!

Beach House to Record a LIVE In-Studio Session Wednesday (6/20)

If you haven’t heard of Beach House by now, you’re probably lying. If you haven’t fallen in love with Beach House by now, you’re also probably lying. Ever since their debut self-titled album landed the #16 spot on Pitchfork’s Best Albums of 2006, the Baltimore-based duo has been making waves on shores across the globe. Before kicking off their nearly 3-month international tour Frightened Eyes across the US, UK, France, Germany, Poland and The Netherlands, Beach House is stopping in at The Cutting Room on Wednesday June 20 to record a live in-studio session for broadcast on KEXP radio. If we said we weren’t super stoked, we’d totally be lying.

Beach House, composed of Baltimore native Alex Scally (drums and keys) and French born Victoria Legrand (vocals and organ), has released three more albums since 2006 – each more widely received than the one before. Their third album, Teen Dream (2010), ranked #5 on Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of 2010 and #63 on US Billboard charts. The duo recently released their fourth album Bloom last month (5/15) with SubPop Records. Ranking #7 on US charts and #15 in the UK, Bloom is constructed to be understood as a sum of its parts – every component of each song functioning to create the whole. Legrand describes the album to be about “the irreplaceable power of imagination as it relates to the intense experience of living.”

Be sure to tune in this Wednesday, June 20th at 12N EST to 90.3 to hear Beach House record live from The Cutting Room, or stream the set from kexp.org! Don’t forget to check back for photos of the in-studio session, and updates on more live music to come!

Fletcher C. Johnson LIVE KEXP Session 6/19

If for whatever reason you happen to be drinking a strawberry milkshake in the front seat of your Ford Thunderbird while cruising around the boardwalk with a beach ball in your backseat this Tuesday (6/19) at 12N EST, you should be cranking up 90.3 FM to hear Fletcher C. Johnson recording a live set from The Cutting Room on KEXP radio. If you’re not cruising at this time, be sure to tune in anyway – a couple of these vintage summertime classic rock tunes and you will be about ready to kick back in the sun with a glass of homemade lemonade.

The Brooklyn- based trio, Fletcher C. Johnson, has been dropping 60’s throwback uptempo jams since 2010 with the release of their first EP Happy Birthday, which featured a choir of children singing backup against their cotton candy tunes. Teamed up with White Iris Records, the group recently released their third album – a two-track EP entitled Messin Up My Mind – that dropped in early April of this year. Lead singer, Fletcher C. Johnson himself, and the boys have since completed a 15-date tour, bringing retro rays of musical sunshine to the ears of fans across the country.

We’re super excited for Fletcher C. Johnson and will be sure to grab some photos of the session for you. Make sure to tune in to 90.3 FM KEXP to hear the set, or stream it from kexp.org!

Niki & the Dove Record LIVE at The Cutting Room

SubPop/Mercury Records signed Niki & the Dove spread some Scandinavian charm at the studio yesterday during a live in-studio session with KEXP radio. Marking the one month anniversary of their debut LP Instinct, the trio rocked out in Studio A on The Morning Show with John Richards. Engineered by The Cutting Room’s Tom Gardner and Matt Craig, the set was a really good time. Swedish sweetheart Malin Dahlstrom danced around the live room, laying sugary vocals carefully over bliss-pop beats from Magnus Boqvist (drums) and Gustaf Karlof (keys). After the session, the band hung with The Cutting Room staff – curious whether the gold vinyls framed on the walls of the studio lobby actually play music, the crew grabbed an Angie Stone record down to test it out (we found out that it did, in fact, play and it played a Jimmy Ponder album) – before heading over to Brooklyn to play their sold out gig at The Glasslands Gallery. The Cutting Room photographer, Lauren Slusher, snagged some pictures of the session for you to check out and, as always, you can stream the live set at kexp.org or through iTunes under Eclectic. Enjoy!

After signing with labels Sub Pop and Mercury Records, Niki & the Dove released EPs The Drummer and The Fox in 2011, each chock full of anthemic pop tunes featuring saccharine but soaring vocals against tribal electro drum beats.  Marking the one month anniversary of their debut LP Instinct, the trio will top off the studio broadcast with a sold out performance tomorrow night, headlining at The Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn.

Tune into kexp.org tomorrow at 12N EST to check out the live set, or stream it from iTunes under eclectic. Be sure to check back for photos and updates from the studio session! Can’t wait? Listen to the new album from Niki & the Dove on SoundCloud!
